Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Becomes Greenest Dairy in N.A.
Fifth Town is powered, in part, by a windmill, as well as eight solar panels that feed energy onto the grid (Ontario Hydro pays $300 a month for the power generated). Most dairies age their cheese in above-ground, power-intensive fridges, but Fifth Town is equipped with man-made cement caves that remain cool naturally...
Trading Textbooks for Triple Creme
(Fortune Magazine) Petra Cooper left her job as president of McGraw-Hill Ryerson Higher Education (then a $47 million unit of McGraw-Hill) to start Fifth Town Artisan Cheese. Local cheese judges' choice
Those inclined to believe Fifth Town Artisan Cheese's strong showing at last year's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was a case of beginner's luck have reason to think again. The Cressy cheese maker again competed at the exhibition in Toronto earlier this month and again, it took home the grand prize for a goat's milk variety.

COUNTY CHEESE PROGRAM:EASTERN ONTARIO'S CHEESE PRODUCERS WANT A BIGGER PIECE OF THE WHEEL.
Eastern Ontario's cheese producers want a bigger piece of the wheel. Or at least that's the plan as four Eastern Ontario Counties have joined forces to create a "cheese investment strategy". The amalgamated effort should strengthen the existing local industry.
Cheese makers don't stand alone
A "cheese investment strategy" to help cheese makers and farmers get established in a market that's expected to grow from $300 million to $400 million in the next decade, is the first step in a co-operative program involving about 30 cheese makers from Lennox and Addington, Frontenac, Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
Will cheese be the new wine for Eastern Ontario?
You have to love cheese, says Petra Cooper. You have to be able to jump through hoops, says Bruce Vandenburg. You have to be willing to take a chance, adds Martin Littkemann.
